Moku Iki Island Restoration w/ Kailua Beach Adventures & DLNR
Every year Wedge-tailed Shearwaters (Puffinus pacificus - a seabird of the tropical pacific) return to Na Mokulua (Hawaiian for "the two islands") to nest and make Hawai‘i a seasonal home. Moku Iki, the smaller island is completely off limits to the public as it is a protected area in the Hawaii State Seabird Sanctuary. However, each year before the birds return, volunteers join the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) and Kailua Beach Adventures to do restoration work on the two islands - removing invasive species and planting native varieties allows for a more stable nesting environment for the shearwaters as well maintaining soil structure to prevent unnessary runoff of sediments into the coastal and reef ecosystems. Surfrider Oahu joined forces with the two groups earlier in 2015 and loved the opportunity to help protect some of the island's sacred places. Please always respect that Moku Iki can only be accessed for such restoration efforts, but should be left untouched by the public for the rest of the year. Aloha and mahalo to everyone who works to protect our beaches, oceans, waves, and island ecosystems!
