Kalalau Kauai & the Legend of KokoLeka
Uncertainty was certain as our tribe pulled up the curtain, stepping gingerly on the slippery sliding slopes of the trail, yet to understand what adventure would ultimately unveil. But like in life, each small step created part of a new tale, revealing a magic where only immersion in experience can tip the scale. Through twists and through turns, from dripping humidity mustaches and crapaberry drool, we trekked on to the next drinking pool. Out of the woods came Hawaiian chocolate to impart wisdom, to help us crack a smile when our energy fluttered low on the dial. Buzzing bites and flashing night lights, broken soles and cracked hiking poles, saturated and swampy, distorted distance elongated by cramping insistence. Yes, we will remember the challenges but only as necessary addition to an extraordinary expedition. For the beauty that these eyes have now seen is often reserved only for a dream. As simple as it seems, there is energy in such a verdant green when it reaches to the aquas of sky and sea to convene. Words now fail me to tell you the emotion of seeing Kalalau, of knowing the hardest work is almost pau, that it's time to sit back and just experience the wow. Maybe if you wander you mean to get lost, for when you are lost it is then that you are found and you remember how to reconnect your feet to the ground.
